Millwall Record Transfers
Unlike many second-tier English clubs, the Lions are yet to spend £1m on a player during a transfer window. In addition to this, the majority of the club’s top signings in history are still from the late 1990s/early 2000s. Until recently, Millwall’s highest ever transfer arrival fee was Uwe Fuchs who joined for just £720k in 1995-96 from German side, SC Fortuna Köln.
It was not until 2012-13 that this record was broken by left-back Scott Malone who arrived from League One side at the time, Bournemouth for around £850k. Malone’s record stood for over five years, and during the summer of 2018-19, Millwall bought in trio: Tom Bradshaw, Ryan Leonard, and Jiri Skalak each for just under £1m. The lions most recent signing was young English winger Connor Mahoney who joined for £990k from Premier League side Bournemouth ahead of the current 2019-20 campaign.
On the other hand, Millwall have made more of a name for themselves when selling players, mainly to higher opposition in the first division. After two successful loan spells, Northern Ireland international George Saville joined the Lions from Wolves during the 2017-18 season for half-a-million pounds.
After catching the eye of Championship rivals Middlesbrough, Saville made his move the following season after joining for a much-increased fee of £7m making him Millwall’s record transfer departure in history. This broke the previous transfer record set in 2003-04 by right-back Steven Reid, by almost double the fee. Steven Morison made his way to Premier League side Norwich in 2011-12 for almost £3m, and the majority of their record sales occurred in the 1990s.
This included left-backs Mark Kennedy who moved to giants Liverpool, Colin Cooper who joined Nottingham Forest, and Ben Thatcher who made his way to Wimbledon FC, each for around £2m.
Famous Millwall Transfers
The Australian international legend, Tim Cahill began his youth career in the UK playing for Millwall, and in 1998 he broke into the first team where he went on to score an impressive 52 goals in 217 games. Cahill famously was sold to Premier League side Everton in 2004 for just £2m, and he went on to become a legend for the Toffees as well as the Premier League also.
Another notable youth player was former England legend Teddy Sheringham. The young striker made his professional debut for the Lions in 1983, and he went on to score almost one in two after racking up an impressive 220 games for them. Sheringham caught the eye of many top clubs, including Nottingham Forest where he famously made his move to the First Division side for £1.5m back in 1991.
