Swindon Town Record Transfers

We all know that transfer business down in League Two may not be as big as on the upper levels, but Swindon Town do belong to the group of teams that have the financial backing to invest into players with decent price tags.

Or at least, they used to and it should be noted that that mostly holds true for the ‘90s and the time when they were much more successful than they are right now. And besides, we don’t even have to mention how different the market is nowadays.

Still, with all of that being said, the title of the most expensive signing in the club’s rich history belongs to Joey Beauchamp who arrived from West Ham United in 1994/95 for a reported sum of £900,000, eclipsing the former record along the way too.

Before Beauchamp, the 1993/94 signing of Jan Aage Fjortoft for a decent fee of £630,000 was on top of the pile for a long time. But now, that signing is actually in third place after both Beauchamp and Mark Robinson, who was signed for £671,000 from Newcastle United in the same campaign as the current record-holder, have surpassed it.

Unsurprisingly, the departures from the club are still very much far more expensive and more impressive than arrivals. In the 2015/16 season, Swindon Town sold Massimo Luongo for a club-record fee of £3.8m to Queens Park Rangers. And if we’re being completely honest, that’s a sum that is unlikely to be eclipsed for the time being.

The second most lucrative exit is the one of Simon Cox who departed for West Bromwich Albion for £2m in 2009/10 and in third, we have Nicky Summerbee’s 1994/95 exit to Manchester City for the same fee.

There have been quite a few bargain signings at Swindon Town over the years that have turned into remarkable servants of the badge following their arrival. Steve White definitely comes to mind or going further back in time, the likes of Harry Morris – icons of the years gone by.

Of course, Beauchamp, Robinson or Fjortoft are some of the names that were met with a lot of enthusiasm when they arrived at the club in the early to mid-90s. The same can be said for the departures of Longo and Cox, both leaving for huge fees and ruffling a couple of feathers along the way as well.

And while their transfer business since hasn’t been as exciting as the fans would’ve wanted it to be, the Robins have had quite a successful 2019/20 campaign.
